Aside from being a writer and professional reader, Ines Johnson is a seasoned educator. For over 15 years, she taught college level courses in screenwriting, story development, and media history.


A lifelong learner (read: academic addict), she holds a Master’s in Instructional Design, and a Doctorate in Educational Technology. She is constantly taking courses on the latest digital marketing techniques, reading how-to books, and keeping her skills at the cutting edge, so that you don’t have to!

Leslye Penelope

Leslye Penelope is the award-winning author of the Earthsinger Chronicles. The first book in the series, Song of Blood & Stone, was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time. Equally left and right-brained, she studied filmmaking and computer science at Howard University and sometimes dreams in HTML.

Cerece Rennie Murphy

National bestselling and award-winning author Cerece Rennie Murphy published her debut novel, Order of the Seers, in 2011. Since then, she has published twelve speculative fiction novels, short stories, and children's books, including her upcoming release, In The Garden of Light and Shadow: The Chronicles of Ada St. James.


Ms. Murphy is also the founder of Virtuous Con, an online sci-fi and comic culture convention that celebrates the excellence of BIPOC creators in speculative fiction. Ms. Murphy is the recipient of Black Pearls Magazine’s Author of the Year Award for Children’s Literature, the National Best Sellers designation from the African American Literature Book Club (AALBC), and the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA)’s Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award for significant contributions to the science fiction, fantasy, and related genres community. Created in 2008, Ms. Murphy joins the ranks of distinguished previous Solstice Award winners, including Petra Mayer, Carl Sagan, Octavia Butler, and Gardner Dozois.

The Bon Secours Conference & Retreat Center is a peaceful, serene location just minutes from Baltimore, MD. The grounds include a peace pond with footbridge, a walking labyrinth, zen garden, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and nature walking trails.

Q: Is this retreat suitable for beginner writers?

A: Absolutely! The Ink & Magic Writing Retreat is designed for writers of all skill levels. Whether you're just starting your writing journey or have been writing for years, you'll find value in the workshops, feedback, and community.


Q: Will I have time to work on my own writing projects?

A: Yes, we have dedicated structured writing time built into the retreat schedule. You'll have the opportunity to focus on your projects and receive guidance from our instructors.


Q: What is the schedule?

A: We will begin at 2pm on Friday, November 1, 2024 and end by 4pm on Sunday, November 3, 2024.


Q: How many participants will be attending the retreat?

A: We keep our retreats intimate to foster a sense of community and ensure personalized attention. The maximum number of participants is limited to 12 to ensure a high-quality experience.


Q: I have dietary restrictions, can the retreat center accommodate me?

A: Some accommodations may be made by the facility for dietary restrictions upon request. Let us know before booking what your needs are. In general, vegan and vegetarian dietary restrictions can be accommodated by the Center. However, the Center does not have an allergen free or cross-contamination free kitchen (e.g., including without limitation allergies relating to gluten, dairy, nuts, msg, etc.). Event attendees having food allergies are strongly encouraged to bring their own food. A refrigerator and microwave are available.


Q: Can I get a refund if I'm unable to attend the retreat?

A: If you cancel your registration on or before August 31, 2024, you are eligible for a full refund of your retreat payment. To request a refund, please email us at retreat@inkandmagic.net. If you cancel your registration on or after September 1, 2024, we are unable to offer any refunds. However, you may transfer your registration to another writer, subject to our approval. In the unlikely event that the Ink & Magic Writing Retreat is cancelled by us, all attendees will receive a full refund of their retreat payment. We will notify all registered participants via email if such a situation arises.
